Autumn Community Week

Last week was community week, this is a week EKC group dedicates to social action and getting out helping our local community. This week was a great success, and it was lovely to hear all the positive feedback on the student’s involvement. Not only is this a great opportunity to get to know our community better, but a great opportunity for students to put their learning into practice, use teamwork and work on their interpersonal skills. Let’s look back on some of our students’ amazing work for our autumn community week.

HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE AND AGE UK

Our lovely level 3 Health and Social Care students took a trip over to Age UK Folkestone and Hythe to spend the day with its service users. The students helped the users get into the festive spirit by making hot chocolate bags, Christmas cards and even playing a few games of bingo. It is lovely to see our students helping out and bringing smiles to those at Age UK. Are you getting in the festive spirit yet?

Our Level 2 Health and Social Care students also visited the service users at Age UK decorating plant pots and having a chat over coffee.

PAINTING AND DECORATING AND FOLKESTONE AND HYTHE COUNCIL

Our Painting and Decorating students have been restoring old, run-down benches from the Folkestone area. The benches have been brought into their workshop where they have been given a new coat of paint and brought back to life. The benches will be put back out into the local community for residents and anyone visiting the area to enjoy. Let us know if you spot one!

JUNIOR COLLEGE AND FOLKESTONE CREATIVE

Junior College Spent a morning out exploring some of the amazing artwork as part of Folkestone Creative. They learned about all the different pieces of art and the artists’ choices behind them. They learned about these pieces of art to eventually be able to give tours of the art themselves to people of the local community or those visiting Folkestone.

CARPENTRY AND JOINERY AND FOLKESTONE COUNCIL

Carpentry and Joinery students sketched their design for a new Japanese garden to go in the place of the old rose garden trellis located in Kingsnorth Gardens. The students presented this design to the architect Roger Joyce and Andrew and Jana from the council last year and the project kicked into action last week. The students got hard to work taking down the old trellis framework to prepare to bring the new Japanese-style garden to life for the public to use and enjoy. This garden will be a place to reflect and appreciate the work and support from 12 public sectors that are represented on a concrete dodecagon amongst rows of Torii frames. The red painted wood is a clue to what this project will look like.

EARLY YEARS AND THE NURSERY

This year our Early Years students invited over the nursery children to have a session in their stimulator room, they also held their own forest school with the children. They read to the students, played games, and got them involved with nature activities. Was a lovely day to see so many smiles from the students and children.

CATERING AND ACTION AGAINST HOMELESS

Our Catering students were hard at work this community week making meals for Action Against Homeless. Not only was this a great way for our students to put the skills they are learning in lessons to practice, but also a great way to give back to those in need in our community.

BUSINESS AND THE RAINBOW CENTER ACTION AGAINST HOMELESS

The Rainbow Centre is an organization that supports people in times of crisis through its homeless shelter, food bank, and food shop. The Rainbow Centre is run by volunteers, two of the volunteers came and spoke to our students about how they can become volunteers and help them spread the word of the Rainbow Centre to the people of Folkestone who might need their support.

Well done to all our students who got stuck in this community week, we can't wait for the next one.
