Learning from the best

Students were fortunate to learn from Ben Crittenden, owner, and chef of Thanet’s first Michelin-starred restaurant, STARK.

We understand the importance of getting our students ready for the world of work. That is why we ensure they gain access to relevant industry trips, guest speakers, and workshops, where professionals can share their knowledge and skills.

Our Level 3 Professional Cookery and Level 3 Patisserie students recently had a unique opportunity to learn hands-on with a Michelin-starred chef. Broadstairs College alumni chef, Ben Dolby, also joined the day to share his passion with our next set of young chefs.

Chef Oliver, who organised the event commented; “With top tier industry professionals like Ben, not only giving up his time, but shutting his restaurant for the day to come and teach our students shows you the sort of inspirational figure he is. He spent time with our students, allowing them a glimpse of this high-level preparation and cookery.”

Students got to experience the pace and detail of a high-level kitchen, preparing a 5-course dinner that was to be served to 40 guests at The Yarrow hotel later in the day.

The whole day was a huge success, with the elegant banquet-style service being expertly overseen by Hospitality students, under the eye of lecturer, Julia Blackman and EBS Butler, Mark Moynan.

Level 3 Professional Cookery student, Joseph Carlino added “I found this such a valuable experience, Ben was inspiring and informative with everything he showed us. It has made me want to aspire to cook to that level.”

The Broadstairs College Hospitality & Catering department would like to thank both Bens for giving their valuable time to inspire our learners and The Yarrow for allowing the use of the Alfred Yarrow suite.

Try Ben’s food at STARK, Oscar Road, Broadstairs.
