An essential qualification if you want to go on to further study and a basic requirement for many jobs. 

What does this course involve?

The course includes study in the following content areas:

  • Number – the essential foundation upon which all Maths is based. Topics include: basic calculation methods, fractions, decimals and percentages.
  • Algebra – the language of Mathematical communication. The study of algebra includes: notation, vocabulary, algebraic manipulation, sequences and graphs.
  • Ratio, Proportion and Rates of change – the manipulation of numbers in context and interpreting and understanding the relationship between different numbers.
  • Geometry and Measure – understanding the properties and construction of different shapes, the correct calculation methods for finding perimeter, area and volume, and the key mathematical concepts of pi and trigonometry.
  • Probability – understanding and calculating the likelihood of different events and the different methods used to represent probabilities.
  • Statistics – structuring and interpreting data in tabulated and graphical formats.

What qualifications do I need?

4 Ds or 3s including English and maths or a relevant full level 1.

Assessment

Assessment will take place via three 90-minute exam papers: one non-calculator and two where a calculator is permitted. From September 2016 we will be teaching the new “9 to 1” GCSE in Maths. Numbers will replace letter grades with 9 being the highest grade and 1 being the lowest.

Progression

GCSE maths is a qualification asked for by employers and required for entry onto other courses, especially Higher Education.
